To assist the elderly in ambulating with a cane, walk beside them, slightly to their side, and if you think they are not balanced and leaning, position yourself in the direction in which they may be leaning so that you can assist them to the ground uninjured if they begin to fall. Most helpful is to keep a gait belt around the elderly person's waist (so that you can grab onto it if they begin to fall or lean dangerously). Rather than a gait belt, you should utilize the belt that is around their waist if they are wearing one. Always stay close and walk with the elderly. By teaching them how to use the cane and assisting them properly, it is possible to prevent many falls.
