The Shift of the Average and Group Fitness Classes
My weekly blog has now turned into a bi-weekly blog since I feel most of the contestants have gotten over the ‘I can’t do this’ hump and are now true believers in themselves. What typically happens in the remaining episodes is a lot of gameplay and strategy as the contestants realize further that they can win the title of ‘The Biggest Loser’. Although the show is still educational and entertaining to watch it becomes less about the mental and physical change and more about staying alive in the house until the makeover and then the finale. With that said, I am here to shed light on Episodes 11 and 12 of The Biggest Loser Season 11.
The Shift of the Average:
In Episode 11 we watched on as contestants went for a follow up visit with Dr. H. This is an exciting part of the show for me because I get pumped up when exercise and proper diet prove themselves as powerful weight loss and health improving tools. Moses’ visit in particular really struck me as amazing. His risks for many diseases and conditions plummeted from the stats he received on his first visit. Before he had a 90% risk of having diabetes and now it is down to 1%. That is absolutely astonishing. Kudos goes out to Moses. Kudos are also flying Marci’s way for losing enough weight to be in the healthy range of 23% body fat. The game is only half over and she is already in maintenance mode. Now on to Marci’s daughter Courtney, Courtney is one of the most inspirational contestants ever to be on the show. Her visit to Dr. H’s office showed her hard work when he notified her that she is down to 35% body fat. By the end of the next episode, Episode 12, Courtney has lost 201 lbs since beginning her weight loss journey. I can’t even find the words to describe the motivation and dedication this girl possesses. I think she has inspired thousands of people already, and she has only just begun. Now, not to detract from her success but I want to comment on the shift of the average. When Dr. H told Courtney she was at 35% body fat he also told her that this is the body fat percent of the average American girl. A healthy percentage of body fat for women is from 20-25%. People think ‘normal’ or ‘okay’ when they hear the word ‘average’. Hearing that you are on the same level as the rest of the country might make you think that you shouldn’t change anything because you must be healthy. The fact that this average of 35% is so far out of the healthy range just proves that there is an obesity epidemic in this country. Body fat percent is not the only average that has shifted. The average portion size has increased, the average waistline has increased, the average amount of time kids spend doing physical activity has decreased, and thus the average weight has increased.
Group Fitness:
In Episode 12 Bob took his team to Crunch Fitness for a spin class with other gym-goers. Group fitness can be an excellent way to get in shape. It’s perfect for people who like variety as most gyms offer many different types of classes and for those who do not have a workout buddy as the regular participants in these classes often form tight bonds that hold you accountable if you miss a session. Having others around you motivates you to put forth more effort because you don’t want others to see you giving less than your best. Group X classes also provide camaraderie and a structured schedule for your workouts.
